Stylist Bettina McILwraith was keen to include an intimate series of workshops and talks as part of her 3 month residency for TOTEM ROAD Curated X.

The 5 ticketed events across the next two months give insight into her LOCAL GLOBAL network at large and encourage play and creativity while deepening the idea of community.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

For this workshop, weaver and cofounder of G-lish Foundation, Godwin Yidana, supported by G-lish cofounder, Gayle Pescud, will show you how to weave your own small basket with recycled Ghanaian fabric and recycled plastic twine handmade by G-lish producers and only available exclusively in workshops. You’ll also receive recycled Australian shopping bag twine handmade by Godwin.

WHO'S IT FOR?

Whether you're a novice or an experienced weaver, you'll have fun, learn and finish your own small basket by the end of the workshop.

BOLGA BASKET CULTURE

During the workshop, you'll hear stories about weaving heritage, culture and life in Bolgatanga, the town from which this weaving style originates and still flourishes today.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

You'll learn Bolga basket weaving techniques using recycled materials to create your own basket. Specifically: 

  • Traditional Bolga basket weaving technique
  • Starting a basket
  • Weaving the body of the basket
  • Finishing a basket
  • Handling twine

WHAT YOU GET

  • Organic lunch and refreshments are provided
  • All weaving materials to make your own basket
  • Your own recycled basket hand-made by you!

Godwin Yidana, born in Ghana, emigrated to Australia in 2013. Godwin is a weaver, international development practitioner and cofounder of G-lish Foundation, a social enterprise generating vital income and choices for rural families in Ghana.
